A Long Wishlist!
Our clients wanted a garden to relax in, to sit out, to read, but space to entertain too. They wanted to incorporate moving water in some way and wanted to encourage more wildlife to the garden but in a ‘neat’ way! In a fairly small space, they wanted to be able to accommodate a 3m x 3m gazebo, dining furniture for 6, gas BBQ and pizza oven with surrounding prep area, a bar and different places to sit in shade and sun. They also needed us to incorporate a new home for Frankie, the family tortoise.
A Place to Escape
We created a garden where our clients could escape the stresses of everyday life. By ‘losing’ the central lawn we had more flexibility to create different sitting areas – or escape zones – throughout, with enough separation between them to feel area-specific (i.e. reading, relaxing, eating, drinking, etc). A simple, square, feature pathway led to the zones while allowing ample space for planting, Frankie’s house and a subtle Welsh stone water feature.
All Year Interest
We created bird and pollinator-friendly planting for all year interest, including a multi-stem Acer davidii with amazing bark detailing and a multi-stem Amelanchier lamarckii which has beautiful spring blossom, both trees having gorgeous autumn leaf colour too. A striking mix of deciduous and evergreen shrubs, spring bulbs, perennials, grasses and climbers completed ‘The Escape Room’.
The Escape Room was shortlisted for the Pro Landscaper Small Project, Big Impact Garden Design Awards 2022.
