Accessible Productive Garden

Accessible

Our clients wanted a garden that was inclusive and accessible for both of them – one a wheelchair user and one not. They wanted spaces to sit out, a space to grow their own vegetables and something lovely to look out on when they were unable to be outside. In the design we incorporated our clients’ existing deck and added a ramp from it so they could access the garden more easily. We created a flat, square route around a central lawn so access was provided to all areas of the garden.

Productive

A secluded sitting spot was included, using deck board similar to the existing deck thereby pulling the deck harmoniously into the new design. The existing greenhouse was incorporated into the design by using it to anchor new accessible, raised vegetable beds resulting in the creation of a productive area along one side of the garden.

Relaxing

The raised beds had a drive in, reverse out configuration since space was at a premium and a full turning circle for an electric wheelchair wasn’t quite possible to achieve; we did however ensure that space for turning circles was included at the ends of each drive in, reverse out areas and at all corners of the route around the garden. For extra height and interest we included a small series of arches and trained climbing plants over them. Planting was chosen to provide all year round interest.
