Earlier this month I visited Hidcote Manor Garden, a National Trust property based in Chipping Campden in Gloucester.  The gardens were designed by Major Lawrence Johnston, it has many 'garden rooms' each with their own theme which is quite typical of the Arts and Crafts style.

This is a garden where the design takes precedent as can be seen in some of the pictures below, it isn't a garden for plant fanatics but one where the plants are part of, and support, the design.   As you walk around the grounds you can see the designer's vision, he has created many vistas and many areas that you simply stumble upon.  You feel as though you want to go through the walkway cut into the hedge and see what is beyond.  This is a garden that demonstrates so many elements of the design theory we try and capture in designs today - it is quite frankly an amazing place to visit even if you aren't interested in garden design!
